Cocktail Dresses
Cocktail dresses are generally defined by their hem length. Cocktail dresses are usually short dresses and above the knee but can be slightly below the knee. Prom dress styles include anything from elaborate and glamorous full length ballgowns to simple and accessories cocktail style dresses. Some examples of cocktail style dresses can be found in the Alyce After Five dresses collection. Some of our favorite cocktail short dresses are HannahS 27704, Hannah S 27681 and Sherri Hill 1403.
The term cocktail dress for short semi-formal dresses started in the 1930's. It is a style that is suggestive of appropriate attire for a given event and, back then, the premier event assosciated with this style of dress was the cocktail party. The little black dress is a well known term, even today, for a short black dress whether as a formal dress or for a casual occasion.
