What is the difference between prom dresses and homecoming dresses? There is really not a lot of difference for most customers but, in general, homecoming dresses are usually thought of as a little less expensive than a prom dress. History of Homecoming
The tradition of homecoming stems from the late 1800's to early 1900's. Many say it began in 1911 with the university of Missouri's opening of a new football field. They wanted to showcase this new field to all of the residents as well as former residents and alumni. Added to the festivities were the concepts of parades and pep rallies. Homecoming is also traditionally about rivalries between competing schools. Homecoming typically happens at the beginning of the football season and, in many locations is one of the highlights of the year for the communities.
One of the features of homecoming that applies to girls is the inauguration of the homecoming queen and homecoming court. The student body votes on the homecoming court (which includes both makes and females) and the Homecoming Queen is chosen from this group. Usually the homecoming queen is a senior level student who the students feel has made significant contributions to their school and fellow classmates. The homecoming princesses can be seniors or underclassmen. Princes are the male version of the homecoming court.
Girls will usually go all out if they are on homecoming court because they will be showcased at the homecoming game and the dance following and want to look their very best. High school years are short and homecoming is a part of these memories in the making for years to come.
